A Call to Arms

Postby Laguana » Tue Sep 25, 2007 1:09 am

Hello everyone!

Some of you know me, and some of you don't, so for those who don't: Hi! I'm Laguana, the new Lead Tester.

Testing has been starting up again, and we've found that we're lacking in dedicated, active testers. And so, I turn to you, the community.

Now, before I go listing the requirements, I thought I'd go into what it's actually all about.

While you might think that testing is all about playing with new shiny toys and getting developers to make the game you want and lollipops and happiness, it's not quite that way.

You do get to see new things: Sometimes, not as often as you'd like. Sometimes, more often than you want. Sometimes, you like the changes. Sometimes, you don't. However it is, there's an expectation that you test it. What does it mean to test it? Lots of things are involved, ranging from the basic "Does it do what it should when i do what i'm supposed to", to "Can i break it", to "Does everything else work with this?"

These aren't trivial things to do. Some bugs are quite strange, and hard to pin down. Some bugs can go unnoticed until someone stumbles across it. Other things, like balance and fun, simply require time and people to work the kinks out.

And this is the heart of the matter. Testing takes time. Ideally, you enjoy your work, and the time it takes isn't an issue. However, testers are obliged to put in several hours a week, turning up to scheduled tests so we can get things done. Sometimes when things change, you don't like the change, but you just have to keep going and keep trying to make it a better game.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is you won't always get exactly what you want, but that's not what it's about. If you want to help make a good game even better, then consider applying.

As for what we require:

There are 4 test sessions each week, lasting an hour or two, and you have to be able to turn up to at least one regularly, preferably more.
Note that AEDST = GMT + 11, EST = GMT - 5
Code: Select all
Monday:
0800 / 8am GMT = 1900 / 7pm AEDST = 0300 / 3am EST

Tuesday/Wednesday:
0300 / 3am GMT Wed = 1400 / 2pm AEDST Wed = 2200 / 10pm EST Tue

Wednesday/Thursday:
2000 / 8pm GMT Wed = 0700 / 7am Thu AEDST = 1500 / 3pm EST Wed

Saturday/Sunday:
0100 GMT Sun / 1200 AEDST Sun / 2000 EST Sat

An open mind. The devs are the ones who are creating the game, and while they usually welcome your input, they do have the final say. If you're not going to be able to cope with things not being exactly how you want them, you won't fit in very well.

Experience with Dystopia is a must. You don't have to be the best player, but knowledge of the classes, weapons, and implants is obviously helpful.
Having both initiative to do things on your own, and the ability to work with others is also a must.

As well as turning up to the test sessions, being on IRC and reading the forums regularly for updates and information is a necessity as well. Having a working mic is useful as well, along with Ventrillo for coordinating test sessions.

If you feel you meet these conditions, then send me a PM on the forum (There's a button below this post). Applications for a limited time only.

Please don't apply if you don't plan on making AT LEAST 1 session per week, we do sometimes throw in random tests when we see fit. (by we i mean laguana lol)

Can't wait to see new faces around the test team. :D

need to Emphasize you must be able to follow orders and use ventrilo.

Many a times we wont be shooting everything we see but trying to reproduce certain steps, people who dont listen will just cause delay in pinning down those bugs and geting them fixed.

also one good note:

you DON'T need to be ?berpro like Laguna posted, you DON'T need to be in a clan, but you NEED to be able to figure out how a change WOULD work out and give CONSTRUCTIVE feedback.

some things people got working in the suggestion forums in the last couple of weeks.

and yeah, I agree with Laguna that most of the times the testers, heck even the dev's don't get what they want (if it is a specific thing) but we normally get what we want in general.. a good game, which is fun to play.

Two last notes:

We are looking for DEDICATED testers, so if you know that you will not be able to normally make it don't bother to apply, we already have enough people who can't show up mostly.

And we are looking for people who can keep their mouth SHUT about what we are testing till we release the information officially.

Final Note:

Fuzzy said it quite good last time: We can hardcode a SteamID ban into the game 8)
OH. btw: I'm normally NOT in these forums anymore, so if you want something from me you need to PM me.

And a quick reminder to everyone who can't get their heads around timezones: the UK is currently not observing GMT. DST is still in effect, and most countries have shifted one timezone to the right (so +1 hours).

Even though testing times are given in GMT for the sake of convenience, note that EU and US test times are actually an hour later than listed (but not Australian ones because AEST is GMT+10 no matter the time of the year, according to Wikipedia).

Oh, and one last thing: if you ever leak anything without explicit permission from the heads of the dev team, you will suffer consequences. Have a nice day. :)

Uh, I don't seem to be able to send PMs, I keep getting this error:

Couldn't get mail server response codes

DEBUG MODE

Line : 116
File : smtp.php

Edit: I just read someone's post saying that they might still be going through, apologies if I've sent like 5 PMs :P

The PM's are going through, it's just that I guess the mail server used to send notifications for PM's and replies for topics is down, or not working properly.

I told nico to sign up. Considering the frightening amount of gamebreaking exploits he finds on a regular basis in v1, he should be gold for you.
I will wear only black and white and hide in the alleys on Saturday nights.

What! no interviews on vent?! That was the best part, sounding like a bumbling retard to a group of people silently listening and having it recorded. If someone still has the old recordings they should post them because I know atleast some of my answers were really stupid/hilarious and yet somehow I made tester.
